# Objects and attributes

> Organize your data and connect it to companies and people.

## Overview

Companies and people are objects in Unify. An object groups a particular kind of
data, and its attributes are like columns: a company has a domain, and a person
has an email address. Each individual company or person is a record with values
for those attributes.

Custom objects extend this model to the data your team works with. For example,
a subscription object can hold a subscription ID, renewal date, and plan for each
customer subscription. A relationship attribute links each subscription to its
company, so the subscription data has context in Unify.

## Choose where your data belongs

Use an attribute on an existing object when the value describes that company or
person directly. Use a custom object when you need separate records with their
own attributes, especially when a company or person can have several of them.

| Data you want to store | Suggested structure |
| - | - |
| One customer tier for each company | A select attribute on the company object. |
| Several subscriptions for one company | A subscription object, with a relationship to the company object. |
| A count of active users in each product workspace | An integer attribute on a product workspace object. |

Data management distinguishes standard objects, CRM objects, and custom objects.
Standard objects, such as company and person, come with Unify. CRM objects
represent data from a connected CRM. Custom objects
are definitions your workspace creates and manages.

Before creating a custom object, check whether an existing object already
represents the records you need.

## Set up and use your data

Start by defining the object and its attributes. If its records belong to a
company, person, or another object, define the relationship too. Your integration
or API then supplies record values and links the related records.

Related records let your team filter companies using that data. For example,
a subscription linked to its company can help you find companies with an
upcoming renewal. These filters can also define which companies enter a
[play](/reference/plays/overview).

For the field types available when defining an attribute, see
[Attribute value types](/reference/objects/value-types). Developers can use the
[data API](/developers/api/data/objects/create) to manage definitions and records
programmatically.
